Earth Skin to Human Skin
“Whenever one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite on the first.” – Sir Isaac Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion
In physics classes we learn to observe this law with numerous objects in our surroundings. It’s often the first thing that comes to mind when watching a rocket launch. 🚀
Practicing asanas while in contact with the earth is a great opportunity to experience this law between our very own bodies and the Earth. If it’s not muddy 😉, the subtle choice of grounding the feet into the Earth makes it easier for the body to find its pathway to lengthen toward the sky. 🌤
This feels good. It’s a relationship. A connection. It feels like an honest support. Together. Not alone. When the relationship is cared for, fostered, and explored, new experiences arrive, such as forming a new shape with the body.
Recently I had a conversation with a friend about the frequency of times we are in direct contact with the Earth. 🐾Human skin to Earth skin, bare feet on grass, palms pressing into the soil, maybe even bare bottoms on river rocks 🪨 —especially living in a colder climate, I wish it was more.
But most of all, it makes me wonder about the new experiences and transformations that may be possible if we had more opportunities for our bodies to be in direct contact with the earth. 🌍
